Over time, the scabbard was replaced by a " guarantee of authenticity", and the person who wrote the scabbard was no longer a feudal lord but a "connoisseur". In order to organize the swords in their collections, the feudal lords began to inscribe on a white scabbard the name of the swordsman, the name of the armorer, the date and name of the donor, and other information.Įventually, the samurai society collapsed.

The great feudal lords had a large number of swords, including swords passed down from generation to generation, as well as swords given as prizes or gifts. Originally, the certificate was written by the lord of a daimyo family in order to organize the swords in his warehouse. The name of the swordsman, the length of the blade and the date of the scabbard writing are written directly on the white scabbard in black ink. This inscription is similar to the " hokosho" written on a tea ceremony utensil box. Sheath certificate: presentation and originĪs said before, a scabbard certificate is an inscription written on a white scabbard. When and who started labeling scabbards? We will also present in detail the value that may interest you. The name of the swordsman, the date of the scabbard and the value assessment are written directly on the white scabbard, so you can tell at a glance what kind of sword you have inside. (think of the shape of a frown).A " scabbard certificate" is an inscription on the "white scabbard" in which a Japanese sword is kept and stored. As with resting on a stand, the katana's arch should ALWAYS point skyward to avoid cutting of the inside of the scabbard. The old belt-and-hemp-wrap system I had rigged up was nowhere near as comfortable! Just a tip - You should attach the sword so that the curve is as it's shown in the photograph, NOT as it's shown in the drawing. It would be more ergonomic that way, but I AM NOT complaining! I am very pleased with my decision to purchase this. The only con is that I would prefer the bottom part of the strap to attach to the SIDE of the holder instead of in the back. The picture is slightly misleading because it appears that the top part of the strap connects about 2/3 of the way up, but it is actally attached right behind the top buckle (where it should be). I am thin, and added my own holes on the chest strap (which buckles) for that custom fit. I am HIGHLY impressed with this product! Its dimensions will accomodate the very large to the very thin wearer. Let me say that again - UNITED CUTLERY! It fits and holds my katana very well. (Nothing against Pakistan at all, I've just noticed that a lot of cheaply made swords and sword accessories that ARE NOT battle-ready say "made in Pakistan," and it is a logo I have come to avoid simply because they're not battle-ready.) But I was WRONG!!! This backstrap is made from amazing quality leather - very thick, well put together. I basically expected your typical flea-market, Pakistani item.

I must say that when I ordered this backstrap, I expected cheap leather, cheap workmanship, and the like. Below is a short video I made and should convince the inept it is possible, and should carry more weight than my written statement. I have said before that the draw can be done from the back and people continue to post otherwise. It is also possible to remove the carrying device from the back and draw, but that is cumbersome and unnecessary. While finding no true faults with this carry device other than the strap material I have to take exception to those who posted in their review that the sword cannot be drawn with the Back Strap in place.

#KATANA SHEATH FREE#

I was looking for something to carry a katana hands free and out of the way and this system works well. Fortunately there are many leather craftsmen in my country and had a new one made of leather. I believe the shoulder would be more comfortable if wider and should be of better material as the shoulder strap cracked. I have had the system for nearly a year, so I’ve had adequate time to evaluate it.
